Why We Are Naturally Attracted to Images

The science behind it.

Images play a crucial role in both personal and branded storytelling because we think in pictures. Social networks are increasingly used to share stories visually, and brands utilise specific image types like infographics to convey detailed narratives and create thumb-stopping content!

The Science Behind Our Attraction to Images

There are scientific explanations for why images captivate us more than text. Visuals can tell a more engaging story that our brains interpret much faster than words.

Here is some key data:

  • The human brain processes images in just 13 milliseconds, which is 60,000 times faster than it processes text.

  • The average attention span is only 8 seconds.

  • 65% of people are visual learners.

When we consider this data, it becomes clear why images are more likely to catch and retain our attention compared to text alone.

Tips for Using Visuals in Communication:

  1. Create Infographics: Use them to present large amounts of research in an easily digestible format.

  2. Include Relevant Images: Add images to your research summaries, reports and pitches.

  3. Use Pictures in Blog Posts and Newsletters: Attract readers and spark their interest in reading the accompanying text.
