The Power of Visual Metaphors in Graphic Recording: Beyond Literal Representation

As a graphic recorder, I often find myself translating complex conversations into images that capture the essence of what’s being communicated. One of the most powerful tools in my visual toolkit is the use of metaphors. For example, a simple coffee cup can represent the broader concept of gentrification, conveying the subtleties of a conversation about urban change without a single word.

Why Metaphors Matter

Metaphors allow us to go beyond the literal. They help us capture not just what is being said but also the unspoken nuances, the emotions, dynamics, and undercurrents of a conversation. When I choose a symbol, it’s not just about finding an object that matches the topic; it’s about finding a visual that evokes the right feeling, captures the underlying theme, and invites viewers to see beyond the obvious.

Take the coffee cup as an example. On the surface, it’s just a common object. But in the context of gentrification, it can symbolise much more: the trendy new cafés that replace longstanding neighborhood staples, the changing socioeconomic landscape, or the broader theme of displacement and cultural shift. By drawing that cup, I’m inviting the audience to reflect on what it represents.

A Deeper Layer of Listening

Using visual metaphors requires deep listening and an intuitive grasp of the conversation’s emotional landscape. It’s about being fully present and attuned to the nuances that words alone might not capture. As I listen, I look for patterns, themes, and underlying messages. My role isn’t just to record what’s being said but to visually interpret it in a way that makes connections between ideas and topics.

More Than Embellishment

These metaphors transform the work from mere documentation into a richer, layered narrative. They resonate with the audience, making abstract concepts tangible and engaging. A well-chosen metaphor can be a conversation starter, a point of reflection, or a bridge that connects diverse viewpoints in the room.

Visual metaphors are about capturing the essence of a conversation, the mood, the intent, the context... They allow me to go beyond the literal, creating a visual dialogue that invites deeper engagement. There’s a story waiting to be told and through these metaphors, I get to help tell it.
